Janina's Homepage

Welcome to my homepage!

Sorry, the website is still under construction and I've just started to learn web design so it's not very stylish yet. I'm working on it though. :)

So, my name is Janina and I live in Northern Finland (it's located in Northern Europe, for all of you that don't know where Finland is)

my photo

This is me, jumping on a rock.

And this is a map of Europe which shows you where I live exactly.

Here are some photos that I've taken near my home:

The first one is a lake close to my home. Finland is known for its lakes (there are literally thousands of lakes in Finland, and one very close to my home. The other picture is my summer cottage, and it's not too far from where I live, either. It takes about 30 min drive to get there. The flowers are called "kidneywort" and they are the first flowers to appear after the long winter.

Some reindeers that I saw during a roadtrip in Lapland (I live about in the border of the "official Lapland", so it is very easy to meet these lovely fellows just by driving around). They are tamed animals that are living freely in Northern Finland and every now and then gathered. Their meat and fur are very precious so they are important animals for people in Lapland.

This is how it looks like here in the middle of the long winter. It can be quite cold, but the worst thing is the darkness that makes you feel tired all the time. In the middle of the winter the sun doesn't rise at all.

A photo I've taken while cross-country skiing.

A misty morning in my summer cottage.

Wanna meet my pets?

Karvinen (Garfield), my beloved cat

Rekku (labrador retriever) & Haukku (golden retriever)

My biggest achievement in life so far:

I volunteered in Namibia for one year when I was younger

It was one of the best experiences in my life. I couldn't secure a place in a university at a first try, so I decided to spend one year teaching in Namibia. I saw so many exciting things that I couldn't have seen otherwise, and I also learned to look after myself then. After all, I was very young. Now I'm a bit older, but still young at heart. ;)

Year Out Group is one good international organization for taking the leap: http://www.yearoutgroup.org/

By the way, did you know that nearly 1 billion people suffer needlessly without access to safe water? My experiences from Namibia prove that it is possible to change the world if we just want to. Check out the home page of "the Water Project": http://thewaterproject.org/

Their mission is to provide clean and safe drinking water with their partners by drilling fresh water wells and constructing other sustainable water projects. I'm supporting them! If you would like to do something good, check out their website as well. Together we can change the world.

This is a picture from Kenya, where they are constructing a well pad for a school. This one single well can serve 850 people.

Here the clean water is flowing from the well.

Some of my favourite songs (there are too many to list them all here, but these are some of them):

The Rasmus - In the Shadows

Eric Clapton - Layla (live version)

Connie Talbot - Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Isn't she cute :)

Stevie Wonder - As

Volbeat - Fallen

My favourite poems:

As Much As You Can by Constantine P. Cavafy

Even if you cannot shape your life as you want it,
at least try this
as much as you can; do not debase it
in excessive contact with the world,
in the excessive movements and talk.

Do not debase it by taking it,
dragging it often and exposing it
to the daily folly
of relationships and associations,
until it becomes burdensome as an alien life.

Water Babes by Ivan Donn Carswell

We were water babes, born in the arms of a sparkling brook
that patiently took us into its heart. At the very start we
were never far from its shingly banks, playing amid ranks
of serried wildflowers. When one of us all but drowned
in a careless encounter the stream buoyed her up in a swirling embrace,
enchanted by her smile, ingenuously placed a coronet of gold
on her touseled head and delivered a beatified child of the water.
All of us knew who had saved her. She wears the crown still,
the gold faded to russet in autumn decline, but her love
is as pure as the divine water that gave her her life.
In the passage of time we grew out of the streamside
and flowed into a fractious world beyond the sheltered hills,
we learned of wars and catastrophes, torment and misery,
the dour pain of soured relationships; lessons which
challenged our humble origins, questions unanswered.
One cannot deny a brook may breach its peaceful banks
and scour a flagrant path with awesome power,
potential might belies the calm that flowers
in gentle times, and gentle times were all we knew.
But beside our brook the true conscience of peace
had shaped our thoughts and romantic beliefs.

A Dream Within A Dream by Edgar Allan Poe
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow--
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand--
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep--while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You by Pablo Neruda
I do not love you except because I love you;
I go from loving to not loving you,
From waiting to not waiting for you
My heart moves from cold to fire.

I love you only because it's you the one I love;
I hate you deeply, and hating you
Bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you
Is that I do not see you but love you blindly.

Maybe January light will consume
My heart with its cruel
Ray, stealing my key to true calm.

In this part of the story I am the one who
Dies, the only one, and I will die of love because I love you,
Because I love you, Love, in fire and blood.

Some Really nice quotes that touch me:

All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.

T. E. Lawrence

Everything that is new or uncommon raises a pleasure in the imagination, because it fills the soul with an agreeable surprise, gratifies its curiosity, and gives it an idea of which it was not before possessed.
Joseph Addison

He that cannot forgive others breaks the bridge over which he must pass himself; for every man has need to be forgiven.
Thomas Fuller
